WTS Company Member Armando Ortega picked a kid to play the “steam iron drill.” Armando helps him put on his costume and instructs him on what to do. This little guy gives 110%. He’s gyrating and wiggling, pumping away, using his body to become the steam iron drill. In my 23 years with WTS, I have never seen such commitment. The audience loves it! When the young boy's performance is over, he gets a standing ovation. The kid is beaming. After the show, the principal comes backstage to compliment us. The principal also tells us that this little guy has not said a word all year. He blew everybody away.

Tell me this small theatrical experience hasn't helped with this kids self-esteem. A self-esteem that can translate into the classroom. His classmates and teachers will now look at him with new eyes, seeing what was his previously hidden potential and spirit.

These small, seemingly insignificant experiences happen all the time. This is why I believe in this work.

~Linda MillerWe Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-65975673551965870202009-03-16T18:29:00.000-07:002009-03-16T18:38:15.627-07:00Thoughts from a member of our Highland Park community, Chris NyergesAs various thoughtful individuals have bemoaned the ever-decreasing level of "community" in this country, I have observed that we do ourselves a disservice when we ignore "the arts" in our efforts to revitalize local community, and our country in general.

Though there is always healthy debate about what constitutes "good art,"
it is at least observable and tangible that the art of We Tell Stories brings the people of the community together and is thus part of the glue that binds us.

It would be instructive to study the differences between Athens and Sparta. When times are tough, should we be compelled to move and think in stark militaristic fashion? Is that our real salvation? Or should we instead think in expansive, inclusive, and uplifting ways? Shouldn't we embrace the arts -- after all, "the arts" represent our human expression. In some respects, the arts and where they lead our thinking and where they lead us culturally, are our raison d'etre.

In this modern age when so many communities have lost their way, We Tell Stories has been a vital link in finding our way home.

We Tell Stories deserves not only our admiration but our support.

Christopher Nyerges
~Teacher
~Author, "How To Survive Anywhere"
~Manager, Highland Park Farmers Market

www.ChristopherNyerges.comWe Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-10769425573487966732009-03-10T13:21:00.001-07:002009-03-10T15:48:02.403-07:00WTS' Jamie Hebert Interviews 8-year-old Penelope Hill about the arts in schools“They don’t have this in schools anymore”, my mother sighed. She was referring to the toy kitchen in which my 2-year old niece was engrossed at the Chino Youth Museum.

My mother, a resource aid at an elementary school in Tulare, CA wasn’t referring specifically to the tiny, wooden refrigerator stuffed with plastic fruits and vegetables, but more the idea of “play” in schools. I asked her what kids do in kindergarten and she said reading, math--basically a lot of work. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Or Cassandra a dull girl. Or Jose or Myra or Lucy.

How do the arts present themselves in the elementary schools of today? What would school be like without play? I went directly to the source. I visited a very special 8-year old friend to get the lowdown.

Jamie: I know the answer, but what is your name?
Penelope: Penelope Hill.

Jamie: What school do you attend, and what grade?
Penelope: Ivanhoe Elementary and I’m in 3rd Grade.

Jamie: What is your favorite subject in school?
Penelope: Dance.

Jamie: Lovely. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Penelope: An actor.

Jamie: What made you want to be an actor?
Penelope: My mom is an actor. I was in a movie with her…ten years ago I think.

Jamie: You were in a movie ten years ago?! I find that funny.
Penelope: No. (Laughs). It was called “Ten Years Ago” maybe.

Jamie: Oh, the play, “The Last Ten Years” you were in with your mother. I saw that. You did a lot of cartwheels Penelope.
Penelope: And bingo.

Jamie: Back to your school. What arts do you have at your school? Like, painting, music, etc.
Penelope: We have dance. Every Wednesday in the auditorium.

Jamie: Dance. That must be fun.
Penelope: Yeah. My teacher is really nice. We are learning Chinese Ribbon dance soon.

Jamie: Fun. How about music? Do you learn music?
Penelope: Yep. During dance we play [music].

Jamie: You play live for the dancing?
Penelope: Uh-huh.

Jamie: Cool. What instruments do you play?
Penelope: Taiko sticks and other plain drum sticks.

Jamie: Do you have any other arts classes in school?
Penelope: We do 3-D. We draw lines in 3-D then we paint it.

Jamie: Have you ever had performers from outside your school come to do an assembly in your cafeteria?
Penelope: Auditorium. We had magic. And there were live animals. Goats and snakes…

Jamie: Oh my goodness. Did you go onstage and hold a snake?
Penelope: A corn snake. It was big, a couple of us had to hold it.

Jamie: I’m going to ask you a fun question. If you could have a dream day at school where you can do anything you want, what would it be like?

Penelope: DVD’s in school. We would watch the last Beethoven movie, or DVD’s about animals. House animals like dogs and cats, oooh, and parrots! And, a Rock-n-Roll band would come to play at school!

Jamie: Penelope, if there were no arts in school, no dance, no sketching, no performers in the auditorium, what would school be like?

Penelope: Boring. (Laughs) Only...science is fun. That would just be a plain school if you don’t have anything awesome like dance.

Jamie: What do you think is missing from your school?
Penelope: We should play Twister everyday.

Although arts are currently part of the curriculum at Ivanhoe Elementary, they could certainly be less so in the near future. In our current economic climate, arts organizations are loosing funding. Teaching artists and visiting performers may be swept out of schools’ budgets in the near future. And, without these necessary, mind opening and expressive “play” times, my niece and Penelope may well have to settle for all work and no play. And we all know what that makes. We Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-3448921680592716572009-03-03T15:14:00.000-08:002009-03-03T16:22:46.832-08:00HOW CAN EDUCATORS APPLY THEATRE STANDARDS?HOW CAN EDUCATORS APPLY THE CALIFORNIA THEATRE ARTS STANDARDS to student learning? When children experience We Tell Stories shows they are seeing, listening, and processing theatre concepts, creating characters from their seats, using their voices and gestures, experiencing stories from different cultures and times, applauding, participating, comparing, reviewing, analyzing and making connections to other art forms. After they have seen a show they’ve made a connection to all five strands of the California Content Standards in Theater. Educators can apply the standards in the classroom by having students act out scenes from stories. When students act out stories, they are connecting language arts and theatre arts. Through their execution they are learning the language of the theatre.

The following definitions of the strands are listed below along with examples of how the standards apply to student learning.

1. Artistic Perception: Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to theatre.
Children see others perform. They form ideas, internalize stories and identify the character's needs.

2. Creative Expression: Creating, performing and participating in theatre.
When children are given the opportunity to retell stories or act out scenes they are speaking, gesturing, playing a character, working together as an ensemble, wearing costumes, being creative!

3. Aesthetic Valuing: Responding to, analyzing and critiquing theatrical experiences.
Children respond by analyzing, applauding, clapping, and laughing. Students can write reviews.

4. Historical and Cultural Context: Understanding the historical contributions and cultural dimensions of theatre.
Children hear stories from different cultures and times, (myths, folklores and fables) when they see We Tell Stories shows. Teachers can use stories from different cultures in the classroom and have students research the period in which the stories takes place.

5. Connections, Relationships, Applications: Connecting and applying what is learned in theatre to other art forms, academic subject areas and careers in theatre.
Children are increasing their language arts skills when they are speaking in front of an audience. They learn about staging when they act out scenes and they learn to work cooperatively together as a group whenever they do theatre exercises.

Joyce Lee
Director of Education Programs @ We Tell StoriesWe Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-66997121719878659082009-02-26T16:11:00.000-08:002009-02-26T16:40:36.297-08:00Susan Devlin, Programs Director, Tells her Story...I began my journey with We Tell Stories in 1986 as a performing artist touring the schools all over the Southland. You've never lived until you have the experience of waking up before dawn, dress in bright colors which startle the senses, drive to the ends of the earth, unload a heavy steamer trunk filled with costumes and props, and perform on a school stage (some are extremely modern and professional, while others were seemingly built while dinosaurs ruled the earth). Despite all that, the experience of interacting with the students and introducing them to storytelling and theatre is nothing short of magical. The twinkle in their eyes, the creative expression bursting from their imaginations, the joy of discovering characters from within yourself unfolds on that stage. You can't help but feel how important and life changing this work can be. I've heard countless stories about the shy student who came out of their shell, the misfit who suddenly becomes more outgoing and popular after being on stage with us, and the student who discovers a love of theatre and goes on to pursue a career in the arts. Now I watch from a different perspective, that of the Programs Director (which I've been since 1993) and although I'm not out there in the trenches anymore, I plan and coordinate our programs with the schools and venues where we perform. It's a labor of love. One of my favorite stories comes from parents who tell me they attended our shows when they were young and now they're bringing their children to see our shows. Keep those stories coming!!!We Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-37387196876206377872009-02-17T14:25:00.000-08:002009-02-17T14:31:46.069-08:00WTS company member Cadry Nelson shares her experiences:
I’ve been a touring children’s theatre artist with We Tell Stories for a decade. I’ve had an opportunity to go into so many schools, big ones and small ones. I’ve been into schools with airport style metal detectors, and I’ve been into schools with attached theatres that were grander than any of the theatres at the university I attended. I’ve been into schools whose students had never before seen a play. I’ve had principals tell me that their students hadn’t even been to the ocean, because the parents in the area were just too poor for outings. I’ve been amazed by the creativity and willingness of children to reach the bar set for them.

Last fall I was performing one early morning at a small school in East Los Angeles. The school was up a winding hill and stuck in the middle of a poor surrounding neighborhood. I checked in at the office and then found my way to the auditorium, which was also a classroom for a teacher. The auditorium consisted of a tiny stage, some folding chairs, and a couple of mats near the stage. Their space was so limited, all space had to be utilized. The off-stage space was being used as an office on one side and a storage room on the other. The teacher who taught in the space greeted us. One of my fellow actors asked where she could buy a soft drink, perhaps in the teacher’s lounge. The teacher told her, “We’re a poor school. We don’t have a soda machine. We don’t even have a true cafeteria. The meals for our students are brought into us everyday.”

The students started filing into the auditorium, and a group of rambunctious boys sat on the mats at the front of the stage. The boys were in third grade, but were trying to appear older, more mature. One boy had a mohawk, which was falling to the side of his face.

“Hey,” the boys asked me, “what are you doing here today?”

“We’re going to be telling three stories,” I said.

They noticed the props and costumes surrounding our trunk in the center of the stage.

“Do you have any guns in the show?” they chimed in. “We like guns.”

“Do you have any fights in these stories?” one of the boys piped in.

“No, we don’t have any guns in the show or violence.”

I felt uncomfortable with their questioning. I knew the boys were only being eager and curious, but it felt strange and inappropriate to have third graders asking me about guns. I moved away from them and started the show.

We have volunteers come up onstage during the show. Instead of raising a hand to volunteer, the kids have to do a task to come onstage. They need to show that they’re really listening, and then when a child looks me right in the eye, unabashed and unafraid, I know that he or she really wants to come onstage and is committed to performing.

For this particular story that day I needed a town crier. I told the audience to sit up straight in their chairs, tall and proud. The boy with the mohawk sat up straight and tall on the mat. He clasped his hands, one into another, and looked me straight in the eye. I thought about him asking about guns, and I thought he might be a live wire on stage. I thought it might be a bad idea to bring him up for fear he’d do or say something inappropriate. I walked on looking at other kids to pick. Then he caught my eye again. He was looking at me so intently. He needed to come up. I turned to him and asked if he’d like to come up onstage and help me tell the story.

“Yes!” he said in a big voice.

I took him offstage to teach him his part. First, he played the part of a scholar. He seemed nervous at first, but also like he was gaining momentum. Then he played the part of a metal smith. He was supposed to make himself look big and strong. He had to bend a metal bar. I handed the bar to him offstage, and he pretended it was a gun.

“Hold it like this,” I showed him, grasping the bar in two hands.

In front of his classmates and the rest of the school, he bent the bar, made out of cloth and wire, with his hands, and they laughed and cheered. He said his lines with his enthusiasm, and when he played the town crier at the end of the story, he was improvising and having a wonderful time. He took a bow, and everyone applauded. After the show was done and the curtains were closed, he lifted the curtains up from underneath and asked, “Hey, when are you coming back? That was so much fun!”

It is for students like these that especially need We Tell Stories, and it is students like these who won’t have access to the arts if the funding disappears. Kids now more than ever need validation, encouragement, and inspiration. They need to be shown there are peaceful and creative ways they can express their feelings, emotions, and concerns. They need to know there are ways to have fun and play that don’t involve violence. If we don’t show them alternatives, who will? If we don’t reach them now, then when will we?
We Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-27183176520177753402009-02-10T16:54:00.000-08:002009-02-10T16:57:56.209-08:00Praise for WTS in the LA Times, 2004We Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-11156565572535155212009-02-10T15:44:00.001-08:002009-02-10T15:44:54.651-08:00We Tell Stories Performs "Toddler Tales" at Mark Twain Library

On Tuesday, February 17th at 3:30 pm, We Tell Stories will perform “Toddler Tales” at the Mark Tw

View >>

We Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-32523002435399145722009-02-09T13:40:00.000-08:002009-02-09T14:35:19.329-08:00Keep Arts in the Stimulus PackageOn Friday afternoon (2/6/09), the Senate approved language that will prevent many arts organizations from receiving any portion of the economic stimulus package. It shapes a student and becomes a part of who they are. It is art, not technology, that is the highest form of communication. When art is an integral part of a child's studies, they can understand and experience concepts in a complete and personal way.

To me, it is ludicrous to suppose there is any other approach to education. Art is one of the greatest joys in life, and is, in my opinion, the most beautiful way human beings express themselves. Provide a well-rounded education for our students by funding arts education.

Let our kids learn in color rather than in shades of grey.

PLEASE Support Arts Education in LAUSD.

Candy Danzig,

We Tell Stories
Director of Staff Development & Master TeacherWe Tell Storieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13949471194806571055noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630771904407987309.post-42727906428283617702009-01-29T16:23:00.000-08:002009-01-29T16:33:26.400-08:00Important Arts Advocacy Made EasyRe: Economic Recovery Package in Congress

House

Last week the House Appropriations Committee approved a plan that included $50 million in supplemental grants funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, and a number of other provisions that can benefit the arts. Starting tonight, and continuing tomorrow, the House will be considering the recovery legislation on the floor, and a number of votes are expected.

Senate

The Senate will be starting their debate on the bill on Friday and continuing through next week. While the Senate Appropriations Committee did not include an arts jobs funding provision in their version of the bill, advocates still have several opportunities over the next few days to change the final outcome. Amendments could be made to the Senate bill or the House arts funding provision itself could prevail in the final House/Senate conference bill.

Please take two minutes to take action and ask your Member of Congress and Senators to support the arts in this legislation.

This link will take you to a website that will help you compose a letter and send it to your senators and representatives.
